The re-invention of the Engineer to the Contract Role
The Engineer to the Contract (EtC) role has two distinct functions – an agency function and a decision-making function.
Historically performed by an architect, this role is now performed by a range of professionals e.g. project managers, quantity surveyors and engineers.
In our New Zealand built environment, this “dual” role can give rise to difficult issues as outlined in the Advisian report to Treasury in 2019. They include who delivers the role, potential conflicts and difficulties in raising concerns. RDT Pacific has long been aware of these issues and our response is to separate the two functions within the company on each project. Our EtCs are supported by a dedicated panel of experienced experts who are committed to sharing information, arranging training for current and aspiring EtCs and promoting a code of ethics.
