Sky Stadium, Wellington
RDT Pacific was engaged by Wellington Stadium Trust to act as client representatives for the Westpac Trust Stadium project (now Sky Stadium). Finance was generated from an amalgam of the Wellington Regional Council, Wellington City Council, grants and donations and general fundraising activities.
Designed by Warren & Mahoney Ltd. and Bligh Lobb Sports Architecture, the stadium is one of the biggest pre-cast concrete construction jobs undertaken in New Zealand. It required 4,000 lightweight concrete units, 1,590 tonnes of structural steel, 2,700 tonnes of reinforcing steel and 250,000 concrete blocks.
The building footprint covers almost 1.8 ha and the grassed oval itself covers 16,162 m². The project was completed and handed over to the Stadium Trust after 21 months of construction, two weeks ahead of schedule and within budget.
The stadium was officially opened by the Governor General on 3 January 2000.
Our commission was subsequently extended to develop business continuation plans and standard operating procedures for the stadium including procedures for risk identification and management.
